Neural Meshing of a Geographical Space in Regard to Oceanographic Data Location

This paper presents a method to mesh a geographical area in regard to oceanographic data locations. The meshing is achieved using Kohonen's networks. The idea is to adapt the position of the nodes (neurons) by successively considering the location of each data and moving the closest node and its neighbours toward this location. We have successfully tested this method on an hydrological database of the NorthEast Atlantic Ocean. We have constrained the meshing in regard to some practical considerations (minimal size of the meshes, discrete positionning of the nodes, ability to create, remove or move nodes during the adaptation, ...). Kohonen's networks appear as an efficient and a robust meshing tool. Résumé-Cet article présente une méthode de maillage d'un espace géographique en tenant compte de la position des don-nées océanographiques. Le maillage est réalisé par réseaux de Kohonen. L'idée est d'adapter la position des noeuds (neuro-nes) en présentant consécutivement la position de chaque don-née et en rapprochant le neurone le plus proche ainsi que ses voisins. Nous avons appliqué cette méthode avec succès en utili-sant une base de données en Atlantique Nord-Est. Certaines contraintes ont été ajoutées pour prendre en compte différents aspects pratiques (taille minimale de mailles, adaptation dis-crète des positions, possibilité de création ou suppression de noeuds pendant l'adaptation, ...). Les réseaux de Kohonen se révèlent être un outil efficace et robuste de maillage.
